Miss Maggie's Room Reveal

May 09, 2021 by Katie Wilson in Decor

Since our move earlier in the pandemic, I’ve been putting a lot of my energy into decorating our home and the kids rooms, especially Maggie’s was one of my first projects. When it comes to decorating, selecting finishes and furnishings for kids rooms is at the tippy top of my list. They can be so colorful, free wheeling and just plain fun! But, best of all is seeing their look of pride and joy when they see their newly decorate room for the first time. Read along for my TAKE on little girls’ room decor.

Prior to this home, Maggie never had a room of her own so to say, I’d been thinking about it for a while is an understatement. Before, she was born I commissioned the embroidered artwork on the left, You Are My Sunshine from Rachel Castle and purchased the white Jenny Lind dresser and bookcase from Crate & Barrel; so those were my starting points. Other than these three items everything else was purchased for our new home or was repurposed from another room in our old house.

We started with a new Jenny Lind bed to match her dresser and bookcase, and ordered some navy check wallpaper from Caitlin Wilson Design that I knew would really make the furniture and artwork pop as well as transition well enough as she grows older. I sourced an old Serena & Lily rug, a ceramic lamp as well as the modern rocking chair all previously from our older daughter’s room and commissioned another sentimental embroidery piece from Rachel Castle but it wasn’t until the wallpaper was installed that the room really started to take shape.

With the wallpaper in we could finally play with scale and lighting. We hung the colorful artwork, brought in the green nightstands which fit perfectly and supply a pop of color as well as a visual break from all the white furniture. These nightstands are old but they are basic wood nightstands from IKEA, just spruced up with paint and a little campaign hardware. I found the brass lamps at Target and in addition to providing much needed light they add to the vibe without breaking the bank.

Finally bedding and linens from Biscuit Home, Pottery Barn Kids and Caitlin Wilson Design, plus a monogrammed pillow round out Maggie’s bed. The rest of the room houses stuffed animals and toys inside Serena & Lily La Jolla baskets, a Melissa & Doug giraffe and one of my favorite accessories in kids room decor, the always functional Moroccan leather pouf. Despite the hodge podge of items both in color, materials and price the room just works and Maggie loves it, so that’s what matters most.

Happy Decorating!

My Favorite Room

November 18, 2017 by Katie Wilson

Do you have a favorite room in your home? It may be a room that makes you feel nostalgic, a room that brightens your spirits or perhaps a room in which you're pleased with almost every design decision you've made.

I have a favorite room. It's our son's room. I love this small and cozy room for many reasons but mostly because it was one of the first rooms to be completed when we moved into our home a mere two weeks before our son was born. The rest of the house was chaos but this little room was a haven for myself and our newborn. I love to mix prints and textures and this room is no exception and to this day I still love the combination of the cloud wallpaper, hot air balloons and animal prints.

Our son is three now and this room is in desperate need of a refresh but before we make any changes (ahem, get rid of the crib) I wanted to share and perhaps commit it to my memory one last time. Take my advice and spend a little time making selective design choices in your child's nursery because if your going to spend hours rocking an infant to sleep it might as well be in a room that is easy on the eye!
